UF in Japan: Cross-Cultural Engineering Design

Thank you for your interest in the UF in Japan: Cross-Cultural Engineering Design program. Below you will find some information resources about the program. If you just need a quick link to start the application, you can find it here (link). You will also need to complete the Academic Advising Form (electronic),.

What’s THE PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM, AND WHAT WILL I learn?

“People need things” (Wong, 2012)… and if you are an artist, designer, scientist, or engineer, you probably have a hand in building those things that people will use! And as communications networks spread to every facet of modern life, we must learn to build things that can help people not just within our own culture but from those all around the world. The UFJ: CCED program aims to give students the experience of living in another culture – learning its language and customs – while also studying how to apply lessons in cross-cultural communication to construction of artifacts that run the gamut from artwork to computing devices.

Japan is recognized around the world for its ability to enter markets in cultures divergent from its own in a plethora of sectors – whether that is automobiles, video games, or even pop music. As a developed nation renowned for its safety, ancient culture, and creative prowess in arts, research, and development, Japan also serves as a unique lens to reflect on our own culture, our personal place in the world, and how we can improve the lives of those around us by applying our passion and craft.

When is the Program Available, AND WHAT IS THE CURRICULUM?

UFJ: CCED runs in the Summer C, Fall, and Spring terms. Each is 12 weeks. For more information about the curriculum of the program, please see the links below.

Can I get Financial Aid?

**Information is provided purely as a starting point; please check with financial aid advisors and UFIC before any commitment.

Typically, all financial aid can be applied to the program (traditionally, Bright Futures and other scholarships), so programs are structured to ensure adequate financial support for students – thus impacting credit-hour count and other decisions. The program was built so as to minimize costs while maximizing experience.

Can I take other UF courses online while participating in the program?

At this time, due to the demands of the program work, students are not permitted to participate in the program while taking online courses from UF or any other institution. We are looking into opportunities to support students who need to complete other disciplinary coursework and hope to offer options in the future.
